The Buck Scientific Model 530 IR is an infrared spectrophotometer which scans like a UV/Vis Spectrophotometer in the mid-infrared region 4000 - 600cm-1, or 2500.00 nm - 16666.67 nm) with a resolution of <3cm-1 from 4000cm-1 - 2000cm-1 and <2cm -1 from 2000cm -1 - 600cm -1.
- Free BuckScan software for instrument control & data acquisition
- Wave number range 4000 to 600 cm-
- 2 cm-1 Nominal resolution
- Four scanning speeds 3, 6, 12, and 24 minutes
- RS-232 serial port & USB port
- Leasing options available for domestic customers
- Optional Scan & Search Software for use with spectra Libraries
- Low cost liquid, solid and gas sampling accessories
The M530 can communicate with external programs using either USB or RS-232 connections. The new design uses stronger stepping motors providing faster completion of “Go-To” commands. The Model M530 display is a touch screen. There are no buttons or switches on the face of the instrument. Touching the display screen accesses all of the instruments standalone functions. Spectra can be viewed on the instruments display screen during scans. This allows running survey scans without using a companion computer. Simplified stand-alone reporting provides tools for presenting measurement values as ratios in either Percent Transmission or Absorbance scales.
Our IR instrument uses a high energy optical design and a sensitive DLATGS detector for excellent resolution over the full infrared range. Maximum performance is achieved with a fast scanning mechanism that is completely microprocessor driven. Every unit is built by hand - in the USA - to meet the highest quality standards. The straight forward mechanical and optical design has a reputation for low maintenance and is easily serviceable with quality affordable parts. The system is intrinsically rugged and performs well in even the harshest environments.
The M530 is the easiest IR spectrophotometer to operate and maintain. Touchscreen controls set all instrument parameters for operation and rapid data collection. Advanced self-help menus are user friendly even on complex applications. The unit does not require purge of moisture and CO2 prior to use, allowing for fast and easy sample analysis.
Our Turn-key system has the lowest per-sample cost, and is half the cost of any other equivalent system! The rugged design and quick serviceability result in long term cost savings for your laboratory. You will find that the M530 is the most cost effective infrared system available anywhere.
The M530 has a simple 7" color touchscreen for stand alone operation.

Questions & AnswersAsk a Question
Hello sir, How can i configure M530 for Spectra to be viewed on the instruments display screen during scans. And to allows running survey scans without using a companion computer? Please your quick response will be highly appreciated. Best regards.
The procedure is a little different between the original M530's serial number 1-199 with the monochrome display and the M530c's serial number 200 and above that have the 7" color display. On both versions run the background air scan in reference mode. After it resets change the "Type" button from reference to Ratio. This will change the response number from what ever it was to 100%T (unless you have no response and then you will get a zero divide problem). Push the "Scan" button and on the monochrome display between the wavenumber and response is an icon that looks like a "W" on an X-Y graph. If you push this you can see the scan done in real time. Attached is a picture of one of these older displays hooked up to the newer M530C system board to show what the scan would look like. On the newer M530c you push the button that says "View Graph". In both cases the displays resolution is very low so I would not recommend using this but in a pinch if you don't have the computer working you could use this just to see if the instrument is working. The downside is there is no way to get a print out and you can't do an overlay. Best regards, Derek Hodgeman
I'm setting up two M530 for our Organic Chemistry labs using the ATR attachment. Do you have an easy/efficient method to clean the cell between samples, without dismantling it? Thanx for you help, Dr. Eric Schwab Chemistry Instructor, Washtenaw Community College
Hi Dr. Schwab, Gently lift the prism section off of the mirror bottom of the accessory. Then just wipe off your sample and rise with clean solvent or water depending on your sample. If your using the clamp plate with Luer-Lok plugs you can use a syringe to squirt a little clean solvent through followed by air. Just be gentle with the prism section it is hard but it is also brittle so doesn't take being dropped on the table or floor very well. Best regards,

I want to find out if this could be used to analyze the chemical composition of urinary stones in human beings.
Yes the M530 can be used to analyze kidney stones.
Some methods call for an ATR, but we think you would get better results using a KBr pellet.
Please email me if you would like any more information.
